| Geographic information is quickly becoming a more valuable, and more expected, means of communication for a variety of existing and innovative functions. A key–and often overlooked–element of this information is a 3D representation of the building models. Through the use of common tools–including SketchUp, Google Earth and ArcGIS–many striking and accurate building representations are easily created and shared, thus increasing the usability, appeal and user experience across the emerging GeoWeb. |

Cost Effective and Expedient Direct 3D Cityscape Imaging

| GIS, AEC and CAD 3D applications usually represent features with low-geometric resolution and high-texture drapes. New tools are available that capture the world with both high-geometry and high-texture. These mobile imaging systems fuse lidar and camera data, creating cm precise, high-density information at modest cost. This describes a pilot study in Washington DC, which 25 miles of urban canyons were captured and processed in 6 hours. The results were fused with other image assets to produce a virtual city centre. |

Environmental Applications in a 3D SDI

| In Europe, the Environmental Noise Directive requires the provision of information about noise emission, which poses a significant challenge as a large amount of 3D information is necessary to compute noise emission. To meet the challenge, North Rhine-Westphalia, a state of Germany, decided to follow a visionary, SDI-based implementation for noise mapping. The 3D data sets provided by these new web services are not only useful for noise mapping, but offer information for a wide range of other environmental applications. |

| CityGML is a data modeling framework and exchange standard for 3D City Models, expected to become an international standard of the Open Geospatial Consortium by the end of 2008. The main concepts of CityGML are explained to show how digital cities can be created by integrating data from different disciplines.
